Our conversations so far

We engaged with around 1000 people during our first consultation, talking to local residents and stakeholders about the site and how the scheme could look. We engaged in a variety of ways, including:

Parking and accessibility

The most frequent questions were about changes to the station parking and how this might affect nearby streets and traffic flow. The approach road was also noted as busy during peak hours with unauthorised vehicles waiting in the area.

High Barnet station and its surroundings

Feedback on the existing area around High Barnet station is that it is dark and unwelcoming, and at times can feel unsafe, particularly at night.

Need for new homes

There is strong support for more homes, in particular affordable homes in High Barnet.

Height and massing

Some asked about the proposed building height and how it would fit within the area. This exhibition provides details on our design approach and how these integrate with the surrounding area.

Pedestrian accessibility

Many highlighted the steep incline from the station towards Chipping Barnet as a challenge, particularly at night and for elderly or disabled people. Improvements to pedestrian and cycle routes were welcomed, as current access is more vehicle focussed. Interchange between the tube and buses was also raised, with the incline up to Barnet Hill bus stops providing difficulties for some. We heard that some found the crossing on Barnet Hill difficult and unsafe – we have changed its location to reflect this.

Green spaces

There was strong support for retaining the woodland and enhancing its surroundings, with plenty of green space around the new buildings.
